FreeStyle Libre 3 Review & Specs

Abbott's tiny sensor that streams real-time data continuously without needing to scan.

The FreeStyle Libre 3 marks a major shift for Abbott's CGM line. Unlike the Libre 1 and 2, which required the user to physically scan the sensor with a phone to get a reading (Flash Glucose Monitoring), the Libre 3 is a true Continuous Glucose Monitor that streams data via Bluetooth continuously.

Form Factor & Wearability

The Libre 3 is currently the smallest and thinnest CGM available. It is roughly the size of two stacked pennies. This ultra-low profile significantly reduces the chances of the sensor getting caught on clothing and being pulled off prematurely.

Accuracy & Clinical Data

In clinical trials involving adults, the FreeStyle Libre 3 achieved an overall MARD (Mean Absolute Relative Difference) of 7.9%. This is highly accurate and comparable to (or slightly better than) its main competitor, the Dexcom G7.

Limitations

While the hardware is exceptional, the Libre 3 has a few limitations compared to Dexcom:

  • No Calibration: You cannot calibrate the Libre 3 with a fingerstick if it is reading inaccurately.
  • App Constraints: The Libre 3 app is often criticized for being less intuitive and having fewer alarm customization options than Dexcom.
  • No Grace Period: When the 14-day session ends, it ends abruptly without a grace period.
