Understanding Closed-Loop Systems

Automated Insulin Delivery (AID), or closed-loop systems, represent the current standard of care for Type 1 diabetes management. These systems combine three components:

  • Sensor (CGM)

    Continuously measures interstitial glucose levels every 1-5 minutes and transmits data.

  • Algorithm

    Software that predicts future glucose levels and determines required insulin adjustments.

  • Pump

    The hardware that receives commands from the algorithm and automatically adjusts basal delivery.
